Tenth EISCAT-3D User Meeting

      EISCAT Scientific Association

EISCAT_3D User Meeting 2021

The EISCAT_3D (E3D) project has been officially started with an opening event on September 7, 2017, and is now constructing stage 1. User meetings have been regularly held. Presently  they are held online (Zoom) with a cadence of about 2-3 months. A 12th User Meeting will take place in March 2021, anticipated duration is about half a day.  As usual, the meetings should provide a forum for interested scientists who may or may not be directly involved in the design and construction of the E3D project, and also for persons working more with its administrative, logistic, and technical aspects.

The meeting took place on March 5, 2021,  9-13 CET. This was the most voted date/time on a Doodle.

The suggested general subject of the 12th E3D User meeting was the EISCAT Heater and also the ESR, especially their future. Also software interfaces between E3D and users, for scientific analysis of E3D data and radar operations warranted further discussion after the 11th E3D UM. We stuck to the traditional scheme with short presentations followed by questions and discussion. Submissions of titles/short abstracts are welcome. Most of the presentation slides from the
11th E3D UM are linked at the meeting page.

This announcement was last updated on March 8, 2021.

Registration

The names and emails of registered persons will be stored as long as E3D User meetings are regularly held, unless specific removals are requested.

Programme

Especially encouraged for this 12th meeting were contributions to science related to the EISCAT Heater and its future. Software interfaces between E3D and users, and on the scientific analysis of E3D data would also be suitable subjects. The programme of this and the previous 11th meeting has links to most of the presentations that were given.

The programme with approximate timings is
  • March 5, Fridday, 09.00-13.00:
    Status and Plans.
      • Link: will be sent by email/available on request
    • 09.00-09.05: Practical Information, Stephan Buchert
    • 09.05-09.15: Discussion on E3D user communications, meetings, tools, email lists, Slack, FB, Gitter..., Thomas Ulich, Stephan Buchert, ...
    • 09.15-09.30: EISCAT3D project updates, Harri Hellgren (tbc), EISCAT
    • 09.30-09.50: Data products, plans/wishes, Ingemar Häggström, EISCAT
    • 09.50-10.05: Rewriting IS data analysis code, Stephan Buchert, IRF
    • 10.05-10.20: Update on user  authentication, Carl-Fredrik Enell, EISCAT
      • 10.20-10.40: Coffee break, Leg stretching
    • 12.20-12.40: Discussion on the future of Heater, Antti Kero (SGO), ...
    • 12.40-13.00: Discussion on the future of the ESR, Lisa Baddeley (tbc, UNIS), ...

Practical Information

The workshop will use the Zoom tool licensed by the Uppsala University. The server is operated by Uppsala University which assures that no data exchange with third parties occurs. We do not intend to record the meeting but will make presentation slides publicly available also for some time after the meeting, if the presenter agrees.

EISCAT_3D, a short description

More information can be found at the E3D web site.

E3D is a planned next generation incoherent scatter radar facility, based on phased-array technology and multiple radar sites. The EISCAT_3D proposal was accepted on the ESFRI Roadmap of large-scale European research infrastructures in December 2008.

The EU, EISCAT, the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory (UK), the University of Tromsø (Norway), the Luleå Technical University (Sweden), and the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (Sweden) financed and undertook the EISCAT-3D design study. The results of the study were presented at the first E3D User Meeting 2009.

A four year long Preparatory Phase of E3D funded by the  European Commission under the call FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES-2010-1 started  on 1 October 2010. The Preparatory Phase work has been performed by a consortium consisting of 8 institutions: the EISCAT Scientific Association as the coordinator, University of Oulu, Finland, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Sweden, University of Tromsø, Norway, Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK, Swedish Research Council, Sweden, and National Instruments, Belgium

Preparatory Phase actions were presented at User Meetings in 20112012, 2013, and 2014. A prominent outcome is the Science Case for a E3D facility. The Preparatory Phase ended in September 2014. In the mean time the E3D proposal now foresees a staged approach, with stage 1 having a core site with transmitter and two receiving sites.

In October 2015 the Horizon 2020 project  “EISCAT_3D: Preparation for Production” (EISCAT3D_PfP) had its kick-off, and it was active until August 2017.  Results  have been collected, and notably a test subarray was developed and built at the EISCAT site in Ramfjordmoen.

After an opening ceremony
September 7, 2017, the final development and construction of E3D stage 1 has been going on. The three sites of stage 1 are Skibotn, Norway, Kaiseniemi, Sweden, and Karesuvanto, Finland. Major contracts for the Antenna Unit, the First Stage Receive Unit, and the Sub-Array Transmit Unit have been signed with ECRIEE, China and with DA-Design, Finland. The first measurements for scientific use are expected to be possible in 2022.
