This describes the contents of the F4 planning documentation files, available in a set of emails in http://www.space.irfu.se/freja/plan/f4plans or as one big single file http://www.space.irfu.se/freja/plan/all_plans Please observe that all information in the file is the planned operations, not what actually happened. Orbits may have been cancelled and operational modes changed for technical reasons at the ground stations or use of orbits for engineering purposes. Also, the planner (usually me) is not perfect, and simple mistakes may occur. In particular, the auxilliary information in columns 5 and 6 may be inaccurate. Anyway, the file gives a good overview of the F4 operations, and may be useful. Best wishes, Anders Eriksson IRF Uppsala (aie@irfu.se) =============================================================== Column 1: Orbit number Column 2: Date (yymmdd) Column 3: Planned start time of station coverage (UT) Column 4: Planned ground station coverage Esr, E = Esrange PA = Prince Albert Syo, S = Syowa Column 5: Approximate maximum magnetic latitude during time in contact with Esrange or Prince Albert. Use this as an indication only, not as the full truth! Column 6: Approximate magnetic local time when at the magnetic latitude given in column 3. Column 7: Topic. This is the topics assigned by the scientist in charge during part of 1993. This information is probably quite uninteresting, as most instruments did not adapt any special procedures on these orbits. For spring 1994, it shows when F3C have planned to run a special mode with moments only (no distribution functions). Likewise, F3H ran a similar mode during the spring 1995, which is also denoted here. 0 = no topic assigned Wake = Wake studies IA = Ion acceleration LHW = Lower hybrid waves FAC = Field aligned currents CIH = Cold ion heating SW = Solitary wave structures F3H = F3H runs in special mode (spring 1995) F3C = F3C runs in special mode (spring 1994) Column 8: Survey mode. 0 = no survey Coarse = full orbit survey Dump = dump of previous survey only Medium = ten minute survey Fine = F4 runs in the same mode as medium Column 9: Burst 0 = no burst Burst = burst Trig = burst where F4 pulled the trigger Column 10: F4 mode. F4 operational mode assigned to the orbit. The modes are described in separate tables; available at http://www.space.irfu.se/freja/plan/
